Four Tet February 19 show at the Empty Bottle in Chicago. This has a trance influence; repetitive beat style and more subtle hooks, catchy when you play it over and over - Enjoy the footage we shot at the Empty Bottle in chicago 2010.

Pitchfork.com Track review of “Love Cry”

Time was if you saw somebody getting down to Four Tet, you were probably at a modern dance concert. London-based producer/ DJ/ percussionist Kieran Hebden’s original chop-and-slice approach to beat-making paired a free jazz drummer’s ear for abstraction with a hip-hop lover’s feel for groove. It was great dance music, sure, but not in the all-night-party sense. But “Love Cry”, the A-side of a new limited edition 12″, wouldn’t sound out of place blasting through the PA at Berlin’s Panorama Bar. On the Ringer EP, released in 2008, Hebden started writing long, hypnotic compositions that touched on Afrobeat and minimal techno’s affinity for ceaseless repetition. “Love Cry” is a further refinement of that approach. A repeating groove builds gradually over the course of nine minutes with acid-house-style synth squiggles and vocal samples fading in and out to mark time. The climax, when it arrives, is subtle. If you’re listening to the song on a stereo without a lot of bass, you might miss it entirely.

But “Love Cry” isn’t about final a destination so much as the nodding and shaking that takes place along the way. The rhythm stretches on, lulling you into a trance, then snapping you back to attention when it undergoes a minor mutation four minutes in. From Ringer, to his records with jazz drummer Steve Reid, to his one-off 12″ with dubstep producer Burial, Hebden hasn’t spent much time in any one place over the past couple of years. On “Love Cry”, it’s nice to see that, for nine minutes at least, he’s finally comfortable repeating himself.

[from "Love Cry" 12"; out now on Domino]
